DECLARATION
The Society of
Saint Alphonsus Marie de Liguori

WE , The Society of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori hold fast to the teaching of The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We are not schismatics; we do not embrace the theory of Sedevacantism, nor are we heretics, for we will hold fast to all the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church prior to the Second Vatican Council. We are Traditional Roman Catholics. We believe in The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, outside of which there is no salvation.

We too take the stand as did Archbishop Marcel Levebre, the Founder of the Society of St. Pius, X (SSPX) who declared their like stand on the beliefs and principals of tradition, holding fast to Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture, and the Timeless Magisterium of the Church.

We refuse to follow the Rome of neo-Modernist and neo-Protestant tendencies which have infiltrated the Church since the Second Vatican Council and, after the Council, in all the reforms which came with it.

All these reforms, indeed, have caused great problems for the Church, to the ruin of the priesthood, to the abrogating of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and of the sacraments, to the disappearance of religious life, seminaries and catechetics; teaching that comes from Liberalism and Protestantism, condemned throughout the ages by the Magisterium of the Church.

No authority, not even the highest in the hierarchy, will force us to abandon or diminish our Catholic Faith, so clearly expressed, and professed by the Church’s Magisterium for nineteen centuries.

“But though we”, says St. Paul, “or an angel from heaven preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema” (Galatians 1:8).

The present situation in Rome is full of heresy and blasphemies that the Holy Father is repeating to us today. Let us discern the contradiction in his words and deeds, as well as in those of the dicastery, synods, the worship of idols, the prayers with heretics and apostates during the Assisi Ecumenical Prayer Meeting. We Roman Catholic Traditionalists choose to believe and to follow the truths that were always taught by the Roman Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ upon the Apostles. The so-called Catholic Church now shepherded by Rome is a new church, no longer the Catholic Church, and we will turn a deaf ear to the novelties and heresies of that Church. The present administration in Rome no longer represents the Catholic Church. At present, Rome is becoming the seat of the Antichrist. The true Faith does not exist in heresy.

It is impossible to modify profoundly the lex orandi without modifying the lex credendi. To the Novus Ordo Missae of the Second Vatican Council integrated by Pope Paul VI, correspond a new catechism, a new priesthood, new seminaries, a Charismatic Pentecostal Church – all things opposed to orthodoxy and the perennial teaching of the Church.

This Reformation, born of Liberalism and Modernism, is poisoned through and through; it derives from heresy and ends in heresy, even if all its acts are not formally heretical. It is therefore impossible for any conscientious and faithful Catholic to espouse this Reformation or to submit to it in any way whatsoever.

The only attitude of faithfulness to the Church and Catholic doctrine, in view of our salvation, is a categorical refusal to accept this Reformation and this new Church.

That is why, without any spirit of rebellion, bitterness, or resentment, we pursue our work of forming priests and religious, with the timeless Magisterium as our guide. We are persuaded that we can render no greater service to the Holy Catholic Church, but to continue in the Apostolic Tradition which has always kept the Church free from falsehood.

We will hold fast to all that has been believed and practiced in the faith, morals, liturgy, teaching of the catechism, formation of the priests and approved religious and institution of the Church, by the Church of all ages; to all books, which saw the light of day before the Modernist influence of the Second Vatican Council. This we shall do until such time that the true light of Tradition dissipates the darkness obscuring the sky of Eternal Rome. We will do this until God brings about a change and removes the darkness that overshadows the Eternal Rome.

We declare to all that we are a Religious Society known as Alphonsian Redemptorist, following the spirit of our Patron, St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, Founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, known as “The Redemptorists”.

It is not our intention to replace the original First Order of Redemptorists, but to renew and restore the traditional spirit of St. Alphonsus, the Great Moral Theologian, especially during these days of moral breakdown in the Church and world.

We are a Missionary Society of Bishops, Priests, Religious Brothers and Sisters in vows of Poverty, Chastity, Obedience, and Stability.

The Society oversees the work of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Alphonsus which is made up of Priest Associates of our Religious Alphonsian Redemptorist Community who are not in vows, but who make religious commitments, and The Oblates of St. Alphonsus Lay sisters and brothers who promise religious commitments. We also involve and include the Laity in our work of spreading the gospel of Redemption to the Poor and the disenfranchised through personal evangelism which is true to the Catholic Faith and social work among the poor and most spiritually abandoned. We minister to immigrants.

Our Mission is devoted to the preaching and teaching of the Gospel of Redemption that is paramount today to the common people as did St. Alphonsus in his day, especially since Protestants are influencing many Catholics with false teaching. To combat all heresy and false teaching that is attacking The One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, we are sent as missionaries to a broken world to defend the One True Faith. We will combat False Ecumenism, False Christian Liberty, and False Inter-Religious Dialogue with Unbelievers.

Our Society at the present time supplies our Missions throughout the United States of America, Africa, Brazil, South America, Argentina, India, France, and the Philippines. Currently, we do not have Ordinary Jurisdiction, but Supplied Jurisdiction, and we are not currently under the Official Church of Rome. We cannot at this time submit to the Modernist Church and its new teachings that are not fully Catholic. We understand that we are not in a normal status but in an “Irregular Canonical Status”. How can we submit at this time of crisis, when the Official Church is in such terrible and theological decay?  She is full of conflicting and ambiguous statements about the Catholic faith. The Official Church continues to cover up clerical abuse with no signs to change and become transparent. It is no secret that we at this time are treated uncharitably by many Modernists in the Roman Church Hierarchy. They tell the laity not to attend our masses. They feel threatened by us because we maintain the true religion. The Modernist Roman Catholic Church treats non-believers, non- Catholics, Jews, and Muslims with more respect than we Traditional Catholics who have never denied the Catholic Faith or Jesus Christ. We are neither under any penalties nor have we been tried or excommunicated by its authority.

We supply our Missions, Religious Houses, Priories, Oratories, Chapels and Parishes with priests and the sacraments because they ask for them during the crisis of the Faith in the Modernist Church. Our Society is not another Church, but a religious community founded by Us. It is not our intention to form another Church. We are Roman Catholics.

Our Society is divided up into Districts and Regions, with District and Regional Superiors. The Society has two Houses of Studies, one in Cameroon, Africa, which is the Formation House, and the Novitiate and Formation House for Religious Life and Seminary in the United States, for those going into the priesthood to study Philosophy and Theology.

Our Society Bishops have received their Apostolic Succession from Rome to St. Willibrord, to Antonio Barberini, to the Old Roman Catholics of the see of Utrecht. The Old Roman Catholic Succession is recognized and understood as Valid by the See of Rome; however, they say, “illicit”, meaning, Rome did not ordain or give their permission. However, our ordinations and sacraments are viewed as valid.

Our Society follows the Rule of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori and the Original Constitutions of the Redemptorists which were in place before the Council with a few minor changes made to meet the standards of our time, while not compromising the Catholic faith. We exist as a religious community, just like other traditionalist Fraternities or Societies exist founded and established by priests and bishops who could no longer tolerate the crisis of the Faith in the Modernist Church of Rome. We are neither Old Roman Catholics, nor do we follow them because of the present doctrinal stand on faith and morals. Neither can we follow the theories of Sedevacantism. We do believe that the Seat of Peter is occupied, however, the present Rome is occupied with a pope who speaks heresy. As Alphonsian Redemptorists, Traditional Catholics, we cannot and shall not align ourselves with heresy. Thus, we must remain outside of her just as St. Augustine and St. Athanasius have said:

“Often, too, divine providence permits even good men to be driven from the congregation of Christ by the turbulent seditions of carnal men. When for the sake of the peace of the Church they patiently endure that insult or injury and attempt no novelties in the way of heresy or schism, they will teach men how God is to be served with a true disposition and with great and sincere charity. The intention of such men is to return when the tumult has subsided. But if that is not permitted because the storm continues or because a fiercer one might be stirred up by their return, they hold fast to their purpose to look to the good even of those responsible for the tumults and commotions that drove them out. They form no separate conventicles of their own but defend to the death and assist by their testimony the faith which they know is preached in the Catholic Church. These the Father who seeth in secret crowns secretly. It appears that this is a rare kind of Christian, but examples are not lacking. Indeed, there are more than can be believed. So divine providence uses all kinds of men as examples for the oversight of souls and for the building up of his spiritual people.” (De vera religione, in Augustine: Earlier Writings, translated by John H. S. Burleigh [Philadelphia: The Westminster Press, 1953], 231.)

The Traditional Roman Catholic Church is a body of Christians committed to the Person of Jesus Christ and His teachings. We are a historical part of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. We are a Traditional Catholic Church, defending the Sacred Traditions as passed on by the Apostles, the Church Fathers, and the Councils, prior to Vatican II. We welcome you to become a part of our tradition. We are committed to loving parishes, missions, and chapels throughout the world as guided by the Holy Ghost. We are also committed to training and forming men to be sacred priests.

St. Athanasius says,

“May God console you! … What saddens you … is the fact that others have occupied the churches by violence, while during this time you are on the outside. It is a fact that they have the premises – but you have the Apostolic Faith. They can occupy our churches, but they are outside the true Faith. You remain outside the places of worship, but the Faith dwells within you. Let us consider: what is more important, the place or the Faith? The true Faith, obviously. Who has lost and who has won in the struggle – the one who keeps the premises or the one who keeps the Faith? True, the premises are good when the Apostolic Faith is preached there; they are holy if everything takes place there in a holy way. You are the ones who are happy you who remain within the Church by your Faith, who hold firmly to the foundations of the Faith which has come down to you from Apostolic Tradition. And if an execrable jealousy has tried to shake it on several occasions, it has not succeeded. They are the ones who have broken away from it in the present crisis. No one, ever, will prevail against your Faith, beloved Brothers. And we believe that God will give us our churches back some day. Thus, the more violently they try to occupy the places of worship, the more they separate themselves from the Church. They claim that they represent the Church, but in reality, they are the ones who are expelling themselves from it and going astray. Even if Catholics faithful to Tradition are reduced to a handful, they are the ones who are the true Church of Jesus Christ.” (Letter of St. Athanasius to his Flock)

We will not align ourselves with Heresy, False Ecumenism, False Interreligious Dialogue with unbelievers. By doing this, with the grace of God and the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and that of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori our Patron and our Patronage, we are assured of remaining faithful to the true Roman Catholic Church and to the true successors of St. Peter.

Until then we continue to look forward to the day of the true unity of the Church, and of being the fideles dispensatores mysteriorum Domini Nostri Jesu Christi in Spiritu Sancto. Amen.

Given on the Feast of St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori being the Second day of August, in the Year of Our Lord, Two thousand and twenty.
